A. B. Clark, one of many '49ers
"We had been notified that it was forty-five miles to the next water.
After watering our animals, which I noticed at times drank heartily as
if anticipating a drought, we left camp, at half past five in the
afternoon. We generally chose to make the jornadas as much as
possible in the night, to avoid the scorching sun. For several miles
we were ascending a gentle grade, where wagon wheels cut deep
into the sand which made it extremely laborius for the mules."
"Fine day. Left camp about seven, travelled untill ten, nooned it untill four,
left and made 'Camp Monument' about nine o'clock this evening.
We probably came over this 'Jornado' of forty three miles with as
little hurt to the cattle as any one else before us, lost only one steer."
